Wendy Moore

wendy mooreI have worked in the disability sector for many years. During that time, I have witnessed many positive changes to the services we offer and I believe there are many more yet to come. I feel privileged to be part of the Independent Facilitators’ Network because I see this as a positive program that allows those we support and their families to voice their opinions, desires and dreams for a positive future.

I have personally seen what strong supports can do. My cousins who have intellectual disabilities have become independent, contributing members of society despite obstacles from government and other professionals. The support from their family and friends, as well as getting the correct professionals involved has allowed them to continue to grow and lead full lives. Their journey has been an inspiration to me and the reason for me entering this field of work.

On a personal level, I do Family Homeshare with a gentleman with Fragile X, who has lived with our family for 12 years. I feel that this experience has given me a perspective in a way that my professional work has not. I have learned many things from my chosen family. His mother has taught me about the strength it takes to do what is best for your child, and how having dreams for him, and listening to his dreams can make a life more fulfilling and desirable.

As a Program Supervisor with Total Communication Environment, I have learned the importance of being an active listener and ensuring all are heard and acknowledged. I have also learned to recognize that sometimes what we think needs to happen, can wait to allow for the more important issues to be explored.

If I had to sum up my greatest insights I would say that through my many years of living and working with people with disabilities listening and respecting differences are key to uncovering dreams, talents and desires.
